Supper Clubs
Todd's Supper Club (Upstate New York) Todd's Supper Club We played at many clubs and dance halls around upstate New York and Connecticutt back in the 1960s. One club, Todd's Supper Club, was a fun place to play. The owner, Todd, was an older gentleman who had a heavy lisp, that made his T's should like CH's. "Letch give em a big hand everybody!" "Thatch really nice boys! Just turn it down." Todd would come up on stage near the end of the night to call out the door prize winner. This was our time to have some fun. Todd's dog would always sleep on the corner of the stage. We called him Todd Junior. Todd would be in front of us on stage and we'd be behind as he announced the winner of a bottle of champagne. Unknown to Todd, we all had signs taped to the back of our guitars that said things like... "APPLAUD WILDLY!" "LAUGH HYSTERICALLY!" "BOO LOUDLY!" The audience would always play along responding inappropriately to anything he said. Todd never knew what was going on. He'd turn to look at us, and we'd quickly flip the guitars back over in an instant. Just to flip a sign up again as soon as he said something else. It was all in good fun. We had a blast, our fans had a great time, and Todd made plenty of of money (we didn't do too badly either).
