The Ravens History: Peer Bands
by John Anthony

1965 was probably one of the biggest years for the Stag dances that local bands played at almost every week. As often as not there was more than one Stag on a given night making for good competition.

The Blue Beats and The Boss Blues were the strongest bands we competed with for audience share.

The Blue Beats

The Bluebeats consisted of Lance Drake, Jack Lee, Pete Robins and Louie Mazza. They had a very tight, strong sound. They wrote and recorded a number of songs that were pressed into 45s. One of the most popular was Extra Girl.

The Boss Blues

The Boss Blues consisted of Vinnie Howley, Pete Bennett, Mark Payock, Bob Grasmere and Sal Sagado and also had an excellent sound. They appeared on a Teen Music TV show from Cincinnati, Ohio and performed their original song Takin Life Easy. Couldn't locate that song but found a short clip of another tune they did called Could it be True.

There were many other good bands playing at this time as well: The Hereafters, The Nomads, The Gospel Truth, Downhill Tangerine, The What Knots to name a few......
